The international competitiveness of modern economies is linked increasingly to their ability to generate, adapt and use new knowledge. Science and technology (S&T) are considered to be key factors contributing to achieving sustainable development, prosperity and economic growth. One of the main factors which hampers the sustainable development of aquaculture and fisheries in Egypt as well as the whole Mediterranean North African region is the lack of transfer of state-of-the-art S&T. It is of paramount importance to reinforce cooperation with the EU and its neighbours and to enhance the production of knowledge and scientific excellence, on the basis of mutual interest and mutual benefit.
